The whole rival Shaolin Schools thing seems like a cinematic mythology all on its own--sort of like the American West, I guess.
Ancient Wushu
ancient chinese martial arts are different from modern ones. The ancient martial arts were developed for military use.Not until the Spring and Autumn Period did martial arts begin to combine with the more sophisticated aspects of ancient chinese culture
the martial arts developed rapidly during the Han dynasty. Different schools appeared and many books about wushu were published. Broadswords graduatty replaced swords as the main weapon, and other weapons were also developed.

In 527 AD ,another Indian monk , Bodhidharma, arrived at the temple to spead the Greater Vehicle sect .L ater followers worshipped Bodhidharma as the founder of the sect in chin.

Heya- sorry in advance for the long rant, I just kind of feel like typing :)

Anyone have thoughs on good new stuff coming out? I will be the first to admit that finding stuff is almost as fun for me as watching it, but sometimes it is hard to find out about stuff to go find. Plus, a lot of recent stuff has been... bland.

While I deperately love Liu Chia Liang, "Seven Swords" didn't really do it for me. Normally I like Tsui Hark, but recently... Maybe it is because I am not super fond of Liang YuSheng.

"Sha Po Lang" was pretty good (more a triad flick than kung-fu, I know...) Very dark, but I am fine with that. I like Hung, Yam and Yen, though I must say, a lot of Donnie's movies feel like "Donnie delivery vehicles" these days- just a method for him to become kung-fu god at the end.

Same thing with "Dragon-tiger gate"- Very pretty, lots of good potential... Kind of crippled (IMO) by lack of interest in developing a real story or characters other than Yen. And... not really much like I remember the comic.

"Hero" and "House of flying daggers"... Tricky. Very pretty, very well shot... I tend to agree with those who say they are not good wuxia, but I still think they are decent movies. A little less agnst would be okay. Heh- right after I said dark was fine. Oh well, they are not the same to me. :)

"Ong bak" was awesome. Very impressed. "The Protector" didn't do as much for me, but part of that may be that the copy I got had broken subtitles... So maybe I am missing out on the deeper meaning. More fighting, but less atmosphere. Who needs joints anyway?

"Fearless"? Normally I love Jet Li. OUATIC rocks. But Fearless didn't. Seemed to... formulaic, and most of the duels didn't do it for me either.
Maybe the combination of his opponents being a bit too goofy, and shown as a bit to far below him.

Not even going to talk about "Crouching tiger, hidden dragon."

"Fighter in the wind" had a nice style, though very little to do with Mas Oyama. :P Ignore the lack of history, and I thought it was decent. And yes, I am veering into Korean stuff now...

"Musa"... kicks... ass... Mmm, well, okay the end gets weird. But it was the movie that got me seriously looking at Korean stuff. Definately impressive.

"Shadowless sword" also totally worked for me. A little more "magical", but if you can't stand that I think you are in the wrong genre. :)

"Sword in the moon" was... Okay. It had stuff I liked, but I found the story was a little fragmented, and a lot of the action seemed like it was depending on the story too much. Curious if it was based on something.

Have Johnney To's "Throwdown"... haven't watched it yet.

Anyway, there are my thoughts. Interested to hear what other people think. Obviously you don't have to agree with what I say, but I am curious to see what other people think. And new movies to track down is always a plus.

It starts with a beefcake guy stepping up with a Japanese sunset in the background. He proceeds to kick everyone's ass while hardly moving. He is the teacher of a martial arts school. Then we meet a total loser who longs to win the heart of a hottie girl, and he decides he needs to learn martial arts to do so. But, since he doesn't actually know martial arts, he decides to try to take out his rival, the teacher I previously mentioned, while wearing a Garfield mask. He gets his ass kicked many times over but keeps getting up: "Gar Fie" just won't quit. He is spurned on in his mission to win the girl by a famous movie star....

Liu is the kind one who just wants to help the undead find their final resting place. Fan is the bad one who only wants to destroy vampires. Their conflicts accidentally wake up the king of the vampires and of course violence and hilarity ensues. The movies ends abbruptly. In the middle of a fight as a matter of fact. During the end credits there are scenes from what looks like a sequel with even more spectacular fight scenes and wonderfully over the top CG effects. I was just wondering if any one knew if they have ,or are going to release the sequel or if there is even one?

If you haven't seen this movie, it's like Logans Run meets 1984 as if directed by John Woo. It's about a future post world war 3 survivor society that outlaws emotion and supplies the populace with emotion dulling drugs. Art, Music and Literature are illegal, and Clerics skilled in the "Gun Kata" enforce the law until the top cleric John Preston [Christian Bale of Batman Begins and American Psycho] goes off his dose. Taye Diggs, Emily Watson, and the guy who played Boromir in LOTR co star. Lots of gunfight martial arts fun, and a well put together dramatic future myth to boot.

In the commentaries, the director's first words upon the intro to the flick are "Ogami Itto..." The name of the main character from Lone Wolf and Cub. They also make reference to Preston's use of underhanded sword style going back to Zaitoichi.

Zatoichi, the wandering masseur and master swordsman, is a mercenary hero with a difference: he's blind, and no less deadly for it. In his debut, Ichi shuffles into a gangster-run town like a wry con man, fleecing the dim-bulb gambling thugs and sponging off a local mob boss who wants the deadly Ichi on his side in an impending gang war.
What I liked was how it was filmed. for a film made in 1962 I was amazed at some of the shots. There is a Fight scene where Zatoichi is fight a lot of yakuza in a building. Zatoichi use his swords to cut the candles to make the hallway dark; so their are all fighting blind. he enters a room and does the same. from the hallway you can seem the yakuza lord and his men. Zatoichi says if you want to die come on in. after battling and killing most of the lords men; he fight is way back out of the room. again he swings his sword to cut candles; the hallway goes dark behind Zatoichi, but in front of him it is still light. the camera backs up to show that the candle he cut was balanced on his sword blade. so when he turned, the light would show the yakuza behind him, then he would turn again and you would only see the lord in front of him.

I thought that was really cool. I enjoyed this film very much.

Bear in mind that "kid friendly" doesn't mean childish. We watch stuff like Five Deadly Venoms, Enter the Dragon and Drunken Master. A little blood is alright, but not too much. A little skin is OK, but not too much. But there's gotta be a lot of kung fu!

Also, my stepdaughter prefers dubbed so she can focus on the action, not on the subtitles.

probably more because I often (intentionally) look offbalance and drunk... not like I'm doing kicks and punches.

I'd like to watch a few movies to glean inspiration and take my spinning even farther in the drunk direction.

aside from drunken master, what movies do you guys recommend for me that shows cool drunk looking moves, fights, training, or anything else that will inspire me to move in new drunker ways.

5. "Sword of Doom". The end of this film, in which Tatsuya Nakadai goes nuts and tears his way through a small army, constitutes the greatest fight scene in cinematic history as far as I'm concerned.
