Folk Tales?

It seems to me that a lot of kung fu/hong kong action movies have some basis in folklore. The whole rival Shaolin Schools thing seems like a cinematic mythology all on its own--sort of like the American West, I guess. But I'm thinking of movies like Chinese Ghost Story and The Bride with White Hair.

Can anybody point me to some information about the literary sources of some of these legends?

Thanks.

There's also the matter of genuine historical figures who have been mythologized to such an extent that no one would even think of making a biographically accurate film-- the hundreds of films about Wong Fei Hung or his numerous disciples both real and imaginary.

as I know, Huang Feihong and Huo Yuanjia are real person. there are recorded documents about them. however, when they appear in the big screens, things hava changed a lot. most movies featuring them are imaginary . not biographical.

Exactly my point. That's why I provided a link to an article about the historical Wong Fei Hong. I love the films Jet Li did with Tsui Hark, but I am under no illusion that these portray actual events from Wong Fei Hong's life.

Westerners generally assume that a film about a historical figure is going to be reasonably accurate, with only some dramatic license being taken, unless the film is explicitly based on a piece of historical fiction, like one of Shakespeare's "history plays."

So these historical figures are, in many ways, folk tales much in the way that Robin Hood or King Arthur (for whom we have even less genuine historical evidence) are for the Britons.

I think the foundation of civilization all over the world is more or less the same. We could find some amazing connection between west and east sometime, right? Since we are all human-being living on this lonely planet. There must be something between us. =P
